After 13 years off the air, The X-Files made it’s return to the small screen! The six-episode event series debuted on January 24, 2016 with a two-night premiere. Fans of the worldwide sci-fi phenomenon were ecstatic over the return of federal agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, with some fans being brought to tears during the NY Comic-Con 2015 premiere as they became overwhelmed by the reunion and the next chapter of Mulder and Scully.
Thankfully there wasn’t any substitutes for the admired stars, with David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson back on board for the series. With neither actor able to commit to a longer-running return for the show, six episodes is all that was planned – although Duchovny has stated that “everybody is open ended on what happens after this”. Creator Chris Carter directed episodes 1, 4 and 6 and confessed that since the conclusion of the series he’s been collecting noteworthy news stories for future use, adding “The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories.” Also making a return was The Cigarette Smoking Man who was featured on the official promo poster. Strange, given he was seemingly extinguished during the 2002 series finale – but of course he had been mistaken for dead before.
